Think about that.  If you read the Bible on a regular basis you have noticed that we don't see Jesus calling all of his men. We see him walking on the shore calling the four fishermen: Peter, Andrew, James and John. We see him calling Levi (Matthew) the tax man. And we see him calling Nathanael (which some believe to be Bartholomew). However, we don't actually see him calling the other eight. We know that he chose them because he says so in John 15. Matthew 13:36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field."  Jesus has just told one of his parables to the crowd. He's left them scratching their collective heads. That was the reason for the parables you remember. They weren't to make heavenly principles easier to understand they were to totally confound the unbelieving multitude. That is what Jesus reiterated in Matthew 13:13 where he said, "This is why I speak to them in parables: 'Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.'"  So it is significant that here, Jesus and his men leave the crowd and go into the house. The multitude is extracted from the explanation of this confusing little story. I see Jacob as a very peculiar individual. From birth to death weird stuff happened to and because of him. Is it my lack of spirituality that causes my doubts? Or was he really weird? Some descriptives used to portray him shed light on what I mean. Words like: deceiver, thief, liar, mama’s boy, doubter, selfish, all come to mind. This phrase, quoted by who knows who, “How odd of God to choose the Jews” could also be used with regard to Jacob. He was not the first Jew; that title goes to his grandfather Abraham. However, Jacob generated twelve sons who populated the twelve tribes of Israel. And Israel, by the way, was Jacob. But back to his weirdness. Even before his birth he was fighting. In Genesis 25 Rebekah felt her babies “jostling” in her womb. Which one instigated the rough housing? My bet is Jacob.
