What are you Worth?
Have you ever thought about what you are worth? In investing circles there is a term used to gauge this exact question, it's called Net Worth. You take all of your assets, like property owned, funds in your bank account, clothes, jewelry, car, etc.. You total all of these things. You then take everything you owe, like mortgage, car loan, and credit card debt, and you subtract these items from the first total. This gives you your net worth. That number represents where you are financially.
Most people never stop to think about this number because they don't understand anything about it. They never have two nickels to rub together. They live from hand to mouth and know (or at least believe) nothing will ever change so, they fall into the "daily grind" mentality.
Psalm 49 should be a great encouragement to such as these. The sons of Korah write about them. These sons write about all of us. They call all people everywhere to listen to their wisdom. Both the rich and the normal people like us are summoned to listen to this coral number.
In summary, what they tell us is that all people are equal in God's sight. Whether rich or like us all are rushing towards death. Money won't save anyone. In a way, we are all like sheep being herded towards Sheol (the grave). There is no escape.
The rich put confidence in what they possess. They don't seem to feel the pain of daily life like us. Yet even in their luxury, they can't stop death's progress.
However, these sons of Korah are strangely confident because they have a secret weapon. Or rather they know someone even more important than the rich people around them. They know God! They know the One who has real and lasting wealth. He is rich enough to redeem them from the power of Sheol (v.15).
You've heard the saying "You can't take it with you" right? It comes from this psalm (v.17). The earthly rich who have no relationship with God, their Creator, will die like animals. They will go to a place of no return either financial or physical return. Their end will be eternal frustration and fire.
So, what are you worth? It's not wrong to work for financial freedom. But in that effort, one must be aware of what and who controls their destiny. This, is because our date with God is already set.
