And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. Genesis 3.7
Did you ever wear platform shoes. I mean the kind that John Travolta used in Saturday Night Fever. How ridiculous were those! I had some. In fact, every time I look at my wedding album, there I am looking like John. Wow. That was the style.
Here in Brazil there are some corny looking shoes styles that will one day be in someone’s wedding album. People will look and laugh. “Remember when we actually used those?” they'll say.
What dictates our style is most often it is what we wear. Who dictates what is IN and out of our style? The clothing moguls of course. Whoever they are. Evil people no doubt.
But why do we wear clothes? You might think that a strange question. There are people who don't. They are weird we are not. Right?
In God's perfect creation there were no clothes. How could that have been perfect? I have had nightmares about stuff like this. Me in the middle of my Junior High school with no clothes on. Wow. Instant panic.
In God's economy clothes were not necessary. And his perspective was perfect. Remember, he created all things good and perfect.
Something messed that scene up. It was a decision to disobey. One rule and they messed it up. They chose to do wrong. Now we have to choose our platforms. Stupid.
Can you imagine a world with no irons or ironing boards, what would we get our wives for Christmas? There would be no Net Shoes, t-shirts, shorts or miniskirts. No dry cleaners, sewing machines or TJ Max. Wow, it was a perfect world.
Then it all came crashing down and Adam became the first taylor using fig leaves, of all things, to make a pair of trowsers. I saw a real fig tree recently and those leaves are huge! Though I doubt that even those perfect fig leaves would have made very durable apparel.
Clothing was made to cover their shame. What makes our “private parts” shameful or needing to be “private” for that matter? Why didn't they cover their hand or head? Those were the things used in this crime. I know, these are deep thoughts for the beginning of a new year.
Our style was initially dictated by a sinful act. There were horrendously grave consequences for all of God's created order because of that deed. We wear or don't what we think will do the job in covering our shame all because of a dastardly decision to eat the forbidden fruit.
As you put on your pants for work this morning just remember, its Adams fault. How you choose your wardrobe is yours, however. Reflect Christ in what you wear should be the goal. And remember too that someday we’ll get heavenly duds that will never go out of style.
