The Circumcision Advantage

What a title right? I'm thinking of Romans 3:1 where Paul asks, "What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision?"

This was always an avoided subject in Sunday school, especially in a mixed class. We didn't use the "C" word. Too wierd.

Paul is bringing up this topic for good reasons. He wants to show that the Jews definitely have had a great advantage during their history. In the next verse he tells one of them when he says, ... "First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God."

The first jew talked to God in person. God chose Abram to be the father of many nations and to bring the blessing of the Messiah to the world. The Old Testament is the story of the Jewish nation. God dealt with the Jews throughout the ages of the time before Christ. They were the chosen. But in all that blessing they ended up crucifying the Messiah.

With all of their advantages the Jews came short of the ideal. And Paul ends chapter three with a well known text about how all have sinned and come short of God's glory. So, the circumcision advantage was nullified and the replacement advantage came to those who placed their trust in Christ's cross work. Paul said it this way, Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

If this is the kingdom of God, do I really want it?

If this is Kingdom Living, Do I Want it? Matthew 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. In a study of the Sermon on the Mount to this point we might be tempted to say, “I don’t want to be that happy!” If this is Kingdom living then I want to go to Disney World. This place is depressing.  What Jesus describes here seems to highlight all of the ...

What! Abby's 16? Impossible...

Do you remember when you were growing up and some long lost relative would visit your parents; someone who hadn't seen you in "forever" saying "I can't believe that you are THAT old! Or it was the proverbial, "Why, I remember you when you were just a baby!" That's the way that I felt yesterday as Abby turned sweet sixteen. At times, in my minds eye, I try to imagine what things will be like when I'm ____ years old and my kids and grand kids are _______ years old. I can remember doing that when Abby was only three and we made our first visit to Brazil in 1994. The future was ominous then; not necessarily in a bad way but full of as yet unrealized adventures and blessings. Now, Abby's sixteenth year is in the history books (though she just "turned" sixteen, she is in reality actually beginning her seventeenth year, I knew you knew that)and she, mom, and I have been in ministry here in Brazil for a little over ten years. We have been ...

What? How?

27 “But to you who are listening, I say:  Love your enemies,  do good to those who hate you, 28  bless those who curse you,  pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek,  turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat,  do not withhold your shirt from them.  30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.  31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.  32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.  33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that.  34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.  35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back.  Then your reward will be gr...
