What's so cool about Moses?

One of the super heros of the Old Testament is Moses. He was born at the wrong time. Where the king of the land was in the mood to kill all boy babies. He wanted to stop the population growth. The Jewish women were too prolific in child bearing.

You know the story. The little basket boat is made and sent up the river. How did Josabed feel as her grip let that basket go? I imagine that her heart sank. How was God in all of this? How was he protecting? How was he guiding?

We have the advantage of knowing the rest of the story. The tiny boat slipped into the reeds neat the princess bath place. Amazing how that happened. The basket was opened and guess what, the baby was crying. What timing.

Crying baby, unmarried princess. Touched soul. So what happened? Sister Merriam is watching the scene unfold. She puts two and two together and realizes that the princess will need a wet nurse. Who better than the baby's mom?

Moses would live with mom and then he would be in trainings in the best schools at the time. He would graduate and more than likely be next in line to be king of Egypt. However, he made a mistake. A bad mistake. He killed a guy and had to run for his life. He had spent 40 years in luxury. The next 40 years wouldn't be so kind.

Why did God have to wait 40 years to use Moses? Because of a little prophecy made a few years earlier to Abraham (Gen 15:13). The Jews would be slaves for 400 years! Moses came on the scene at 320 years. To fulfill his prophecy God waited 80 years from birth to after the wilderness experience.

What does all this mean to you and me? God has a plan. His plan sometimes seems slow. At times it seems late or impossible. But you can count on his plan. You can be used no matter what you status or age. God didn't need the schools of Egypt to train Moses. He didn't need the wilderness of 40 years to teach Moses survival tactics. He just needed Moses to understand that he was going to be used to do his will. Moses gave all the excuses that he could think of. And then he went. And was used. How will God use you?

Daughter and dog...

About six months ago we discovered that Ann was pregnant and were very excited for she and Jackson. We will have babies on this side and that of the Atlantic. We weren't prepared for that news and we we were even less prepared for the news that our little dog is pregnant. To date we have spent more on the dog than on Annie (don't tell her... Ann that is). Ann has yet to discover whether her baby is a boy or girl. Both ultrasound images were inconclusive. Though I did some further investigation of my own and was startled with what I found. to me it looks as if the baby is definitely a boy and has some resemblance from both sides of the family. Take a look for yourself and let me know what you think.

Urgent Prayer (part 2)

Does God ever give you a gut punch? He did that just a few days ago when I watched a missionary story from the other side of the world. It was short but poignant, and it punched me in the belly button and brought a few tears too. One thing that shook me was the final statement that the missionary made. He was questioning himself and said, I wonder if what I have done will make a difference. This question comes to a missionary's mind now and again as they ponder how vast God's world is and how tiny one’s work is. As I thought, and identified, with his sentiment, the Lord brought a verse to mind that I had used recently in a youth talk. It was this one in John 12:24, “ Very truly, I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. ” When, in Matthew, the sower sowed his seed, it was the Word of God. Here in John, Jesus indicates that the seed is the life of the servant. Jesus talked of his comi...

Music Conference

This is going to be a long post. Just a few days ago I was trembling in my boots as the First Baptist Church of Lake Orion's missions team was just hours from their arrival. My fears were many because I felt that the weight of success or failure of their visit would fall on me and I could see a tremendous failure looming. I knew that the team would come well prepared and ready to minister. I knew that there would not be a lack of talent and experience on their part. I knew that they would have great expectations I just didn't know how our people would react or if they would attend. My fear was that the attendance would be poor and that the team might go away frustrated. God be praised! God be glorified! God be worshipped! I highlight the previous paragraph because my Father deserves all of these and more. Let me explain. It is a wonderful story. The team, Jim and Hannah Watson, Faith Gaskell and Brenda Johnson, arrived safe and sound on Tuesday, July 19 though Brenda lost he...
